Gonzales to Resign. Dick Cheney Next?
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is almost definitely going to resign. Yay. One more liar down.
I don’t usually gaze into crystal balls, but here’s a rare Cherry Orchard political prediction just for the fun of it. Dick Cheney will resign the Vice-Presidency “for health reasons” by mid-summer. Condoleeza Rice will replace him, in an attempted “sacrifice fly” by the White House administration. Whether the sac succeeds or not, time will tell.

I agree about Gonzales. In fact, he may even resign before I finish typing this message!
I don’t know about Dick resigning: he is a stubborn and resolute man who refuses to surrender. If he goes, he’ll go down swinging, Presidential pardon in one hand and a cudgel in the other.
I disagree about Rice. Bush would instead look to a prominent Republican member of Congress rather than a cabinet member. Both houses of Congress has to approve the selection, and Democrats have little regard for Rice at this time. Congress has a long history of simply rubber-stamping the elevation of its own members to higher office. It is possible Bush could reach outside the cabinet and Congress for a former elected or appointed official (like Colin Powell, admittedly a long-shot). But a congressional selection would guarantee less controversy.

Alberto Gonzales gives hispanics a bad name. I think he should’ve resigned yesterday. However, we will have to wait and see what happens.
To me, Gonzales seems tied to the “extreme rendition” theory of getting evidence. I think we don’t think we should have a policeman at the front door to be knocking, while the policeman at the back door says come in. This is America, not Iran. Let’s try to be aware of victims AND the accused’s human rights. I think that portions of the Patriot Act need to be repealed. I also tie Gonzales to the more extreme sections of that Act…
Firing attorneys that don’t agree with you is not the answer, Mr. Gonzales.
